Autumn Term Sports Events
Autumn Round-Up
Berwick Hills Primary Autumn Term Sports Round-Up
The children have had a fantastic Autumn term of sports with various successes in a whole range of sports so far. The children have worked harder than ever before with the levels of practice and commitment reaching new levels and the children have certainly been rewarded this term!
Football
The first competition of the school calendar was the Middlesbrough Schools football event which is always a big favourite amongst the children. As ever we took one boy and one girl's team and both teams managed to do us super proud! The girl's team managed to reach the top plate competition and eventually beat a strong Acklam Whin on penalties to finish as champions. The boys played great throughout the day and finished as plate 2 champions again down to some penalty heroics in the final. Well done both teams. What a fantastic way to start the sports school year.
Tag Rugby
Quickly becoming a school favourite, children are developing an appetite for Tag Rugby. Over 100 children played throughout KS2 on dinnertimes and a great turnout at our afterschool club. Our Y5/6 mixed team showed great character in their tournament held at Middlesbrough College. The children played fantastically well in the group stages winning 4 and losing 1 to progress into the championship round for the top 8 schools. Again the children really pushed themselves and 2 draws 1 win and a loss were the afternoon's results. The 3/4 children visited the Southlands centre for their event and with a lot of children playing for the first time at a competition the children were very nervous. However, they shook off any nerves and played fantastic all day really impressing other schools with their knowledge and capabilities. The children progressed into the Y3/4 Plate final meeting at Sunnyside for the second time that day. What can only be described as a tense end to final finished with the children scoring a fine winning try in the final seconds to finish as champions! The girls wrapped up the competitions when they also visited the Southlands centre for the final competition for tag rugby. The girl's commitment and teamwork saw them progress through the groups after some fine victories. The outcome saw them matched against Pallister Park. Both teams played brilliantly with the game finishing a tie with a golden try needed to decide the winner. Fortunately, the girls won the toss and managed to score that final try sending them into the semi-final Vs Whinny Banks. Despite a fast start in the final the girls eventually were beaten by a strong Whinny Banks. Well done all 3 teams!
Boccia
Next up was the Boccia competition which give our children who may not have attended competitions before, the opportunity to wear the kit and go out and represent the school. The children couldn't contain their excitement and performed brilliantly during the day with the staff commenting on how much the children developed throughout the day. Well done everyone!
Golf
The golf competition was another favourite of the children in the last few years held at UCA the children again turned up and performed fantastically well. With no practice at all this year, the children really developed as they went around the various tasks. Special mention to our Y5 Boy Luke who managed to win the longest drive competition beating off over 100 other children! The team finished strongly with the children commenting on how much better they felt they had become over the afternoon with many asking could we do more golf! The children finished a very solid 5th from 16 schools in attendance well done to our budding golf team.
Indoor Athletics
The indoor athletics competition was a great opportunity for a number of our children to display the fantastic athletic ability that they showcase quite often in school. The children really had the bit between their teeth this year and could often be seen practising outside no matter the weather or even in classrooms over dinnertime. Again the commitment paid off with the Y5/6 children finishing a solid 3rd overall and each and every one of them was overjoyed with their bronze medal. The Y3/4 team again made up with lots of Y3's attending one of their first competitions done us equally as proud finishing in the top 10 from over 30 attending schools well done both teams yet again!
Gymnastics
The children have built up an appetite for gymnastics over the last few years with numbers in the gymnastics club steadily increasing year upon year. This year saw the children enter 3 teams into the Middlesbrough Schools Gym competition held at Middlesbrough College. The Y3/4 & Y5/6 teams both did superb finishing in the higher echelons of the competition marks with some really stiff competition. The Y1/2 team managed to steal the show however with their spotless performance giving them a place in the Tees Valley Finals to represent Middlesbrough. After some extra practice for the big competition yet again our fantastic children took it all in their stride and managed a superb 5th place out of all the schools throughout the whole of the tees valley. Well done to our super gym teams.
Multi Sports
15 of our year 6 children were lucky enough recently to be invited to the Eston Leisure centre for a day of taster sports by Pallister Park. The children tried many new games and sports such as Kurling and Frisbee as well as trying some Boxercise. The children gave great feedback on some new sporting activities they would like to see brought back into school. Overall a very productive day for our year 6 boys & girls.
Kids Cup Football
The Y5/6 children entered the annual Kids Cup 2018 which sees the best schools from amongst the Tees Valley descend upon Eston Sports centre. The team had a very tough group with some fantastic teams however performed fantastically gaining two draws and two narrow losses. Another good experience for the boys today and represented the school in a positive fashion.
Swimming Gala
19 Year 4/5/6 children made the short walk to the Neptune centre to compete against various other Middlesbrough schools for the 2018 Middlesbrough swimming gala. All the children performed admirably well with a couple of children missing out on medals by only a small margin of seconds. Plenty of potential for some silverware next year however much more importantly the children came back to school with huge smiles and thankfully a bit less energy!
Basketball
Next up in the term was the Basketball competition. The children this year entered the championship event which brought together the top 10 schools from throughout Middlesbrough. The children showcased all the skills they had spent many hours at school honing and put on a fantastic display. Every game was extremely close with the boys & girls working their socks for each game. The children were eventually beaten in the quarter-final stage by a skilful captain cook team who went on to be eventual champions. Well done everyone yet again coming back to school knowing that all children had given 100 per cent effort.
